Physician Coding Educator Job Title: Senior Coding Specialist Department: Business Office Reports To: Director, Business Office FLSA Status: Non-exempt Location: Atrium Company: Colorado Springs Health Partners Prepared by/Date: Elyse Daugharty, 3/2017 Approved by/Date: Lori Bradshaw-Hucko Summary: Responsible for serving as a key resource to the Business Office department and clinicians for coding matters. Provides support to Coding staff and management team. Works closely with management on special projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Consistently exhibit behavior and communication skills that demonstrate DaVita Medical Group commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care and concern with each and every internal and external customer. Perform medical chart audits meeting minimum productivity standards and ensures proper chart documentation. Serve as a key contact and liaison with providers to answer coding questions. Provide individualized sessions with providers for specific coding issues based on medical chart audit results. Conduct coding classes for providers, clinical and business office staff. Proactively disseminate coding updates to the providers. Work with key departments to review and explain medical chart audit results. Schedule offsite audits and organize special project audits (i.e. CMS Validation Audits). Resource the regional coding hotline. Draft educational coding articles that will be posted on the Coding News intranet site. Assist in training incoming department staff. Facilitate the Coding Intern program. Provide updates and status reports to management on a weekly basis. Submit weekly audit totals to management. Stay abreast of industry coding and compliance issues. Participate in coding / auditing discussions to ensure best practice efforts and processes are implemented ensuring maximum reimbursement through appropriate coding. Attend assigned meetings or functions as specified by the Director. Use, protect, and disclose CSHP patients' protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: One to two years of post-high school education or a degree from a two-year college; 3-5 years experience in ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding, 1 year of coding training experience, and 1 year of medical chart auditing experience. 3 years of medical billing experience preferred. IDX BAR experience preferred. Clinical experience preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Coding certifications through AAPC or AHIMA required. Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Allscripts / Enterprise experience preferred. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret coding periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from providers, top management, and the general public. Must be able to speak clearly and concisely. Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical information in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work with providers and nursing staff in a courteous and pleasant manner. Appreciation and understanding of confidentiality. Ability to work with a high level of speed and accuracy over long periods of time and stress. Ability to perform in an organized and efficient manner, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility. Ability to accept responsibility and take initiative to proceed without direct supervision. Knowledge of CMS coding guidelines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently to carry out work efforts. Knowledge of insurance rules and regulations. Bilingual/Spanish preferred.
