Job SummaryThe Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.The Structures Department is seeking a Launch Structures Section Manager with a strong foundation in solid mechanics, practical experience in structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis techniques, a passion for the space industry, and a desire to apply their expertise to help solve a variety of technical challenges. This section works closely with other engineering departments in conducting multidisciplinary analyses to ensure mission success and assist with developing future systems.This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite work and remote flexibility as business needs allow.What You'll Be Doing

• You will work with program offices to identify issues, concerns, and needs in the areas of structural integrity and stability of structures subject to combined mechanical and thermal loads
• Develop and maintain relationships with program offices responsible for pressurized hardware and the development of advanced hardware concepts through technology maturation
• Conduct line management functions including staffing, mentoring, establishing technical direction and standards, allocating staff support, performing administrative duties and communicating with upper management regarding technical and programmatic issues
• You will 1) develop staff by increasing their technical/functional abilities and knowledge by using work assignments, mentoring and training, and regularly provide high quality feedback 2) direct staff effort to conduct independent analyses, participate in hardware acceptance reviews, evaluate/formulate test plans, and monitor contractors' analyses and test programs and 3) review and sanction the development and implementation of design, analysis, and test methodologies used by staff in the evaluation of pressurized hardwareWhat You Need to be Successful Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
  • Typically, 8 years of applicable professional or educational experience in structural design, analysis, and test methodologies is required
  • Expertise in finite element analysis techniques, structural stability margin development, bolted and bonded joint analysis, composite mechanics, fracture and fatigue, material characterization, and structural test techniques
  • Experience with mode survey test finite element
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relations with customers and contractor personnel
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearanceHow You Can Stand Out It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
    • Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent is strongly preferred
    • Experience in evaluating structures, including pressurized structural tanks, interstages, payload fairings, and payload adapters
    • Background in tool development with emphasis on composite failure mechanics, fracture mechanics, and fatigue analysis
    • Launch vehicle manufacturing, design, integration, evaluation, and assessment experience
    • Nondestructive inspection criteria development
    • Additive manufacturing design, integration, evaluation, and assessment
    • Knowledge of Aerospace industry structural standards

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
