Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors in a diverse community to develop young adults who are courageous, open-minded, self-reliant, curious, and compassionate.The College Counseling Office at Fountain Valley School seeks to guide students and parents through a thoughtful journey that emphasizes reflection, discovery, and the excitement of the process. Students are eager to engage in a college process where fit and student agency are valued and expected. The ability to establish a genuine rapport with each student and the capacity to individualize the admissions process are essential qualities. This is an important position for the school where the Director is expected to be able to celebrate and communicate the mission, the curriculum, the history and accomplishments of the school.The Opportunity:Fountain Valley School seeks experienced and dynamic candidates for the position of Director of College Counseling. Reporting to the Head of School and serving as a member of the Senior Administrative team, candidates should be experienced in the college admissions process and in national trends and be prepared to serve as a leader in and out of the school. The Director must be comfortable and experienced in engaging with a wide range of constituencies: students, teachers, administrators, parents, college representatives, and alumni. The ideal candidate will possess ten or more years of experience working in a selective secondary school, college or university admissions office, committed to building strong, individualized relationships with students and their families, delighted to join an engaged and diverse school community, willing to be a visible presence, and exude empathy, warmth and humor. The Director will lead a team of three including an Associate Director of College Counseling and an Office Manager and will work directly with approximately 30 students per graduating class.Director of College Counseling Job Description:Requirements:

  • Ten or more years of experience working in a highly selective secondaryschool, college, or university admissions office
  • Report directly to the Head of School, serving as member of the SeniorAdministrative Team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a variety of constituencies, including the Head of School, Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, students,alumni, parents, and friends of the school
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with collegecounseling software systems (familiarity with Scoir/Naviance a plus)
  • Commitment to Fountain Valley School's mission, location, and the ability to communicate this mission effectively to constituents
  • An understanding of, ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for thediverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, cultural, ability, religious, sexualorientation and gender identity backgrounds of boarding school students,faculty, and staff
  • Willingness and ability to travel on behalf of the school and work eveningsand weekends, as needed
  • Ability to pass a background checkResponsibilities:
    • The Director of College Counseling leads an experienced team that works with students and families through the college selection and application process
    • The Director develops and implements operating systems (i.e., procedures,protocols, timetables) for the office and programming to ensure exceptionalsupport for students and their families prior to and as they move through thecollege process
    • The Director leads the college counseling team by example; they ensure thatexpectations are clear; and they are accountable for meeting the annual andlong-term goals of the office
    • Lead a team to ensure the highest ethical and professional standards, bearing in mind that all members of the team represent Fountain Valley School and its values to families and to universities
    • Able to share the hope and optimism, as well as a sense of humor about therealities of the college process
    • Committed to building strong, individualized relationships with students andtheir families and is delighted about being part of a school community, eager toengage, and willing to be a visible presence; and who is warm, patient, andempathetic, but firm and clear about boundaries
    • Possesses excellent communications skills, especially engaging publicspeaking, close listening, and clear and dynamic writing abilities
    • Attend conferences and actively develop and maintain strong relationships withuniversity deans of admission and admissions representatives by visitingcampuses and keeping in touch with higher education colleagues throughout theyear to keep abreast of new programs and opportunities at colleges anduniversities to which Fountain Valley students apply while also articulatingeffectively Fountain Valley's mission, goals, curriculum and institutional priorities
    • Stay abreast of current trends within college admissions and adapt the Fountain Valley college counseling systems accordingly and as proactively as feasible
    • Manage the standardized testing process including SAT and ACT testing
    • Promote and ensure equitable access to the college process, including accessto information and educational opportunities for students of all backgrounds
    • Support students in the college process in an ethical and effective manner
    • Knowledge of curriculum development and an understanding of the curricularlandscape as it pertains to college admissions
    • Develop the skills and abilities of the team through a regular and intentionalprocess of reflecting on the professional goals and aspirations of each memberand their skill development
    • Assure that all members of the team maintain confidentiality and discretion withsensitive information
    • Serve as the capable subject matter expert on college admissions for Fountain Valley stakeholders, including parents, trustees, and alumni
    • Encourage students and families to explore a range of excellent educationalopportunities
    • Encourage students to be discerning researchers of the diverse admissionrequirements, policies, and procedures of individual colleges and universities
    • Create an open, fun and positive atmosphere that encourages students andfamilies to take full advantage of the resources available to them
    • Understand and respond appropriately to the individual needs of students in away that promotes self-sufficiency and confidence
    • Provide appropriate support for students as they write their applications whileempowering them to develop their own voice and make their own choices
    • Promote experiential learning opportunities, including a gap year, which couldcomplement and enhance students' formal education
    • Oversee the submission of transcripts, recommendations, andsecondary school materials to colleges and universities
    • Communicate with and be accessible to parents/guardians throughout thecollege search process
    • Serve on Fountain Valley School committees including the Academic Program Committee, and other committees as assigned
    • Typical responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at Fountain Valley School includeresponsibilities in their core function (college counseling), regular duty in theresidential program, periodic participation in faculty committees and/or as anadvisor to student clubs, in addition to the potential of coaching a co-curricularteam or the equivalent specialized assignment, and work closely with studentadvisees School : Fountain Valley School of Colorado
